The journey began with a ground-breaking Empowerdex research report in 2004 entitled Pioneers, Powers and Pundits. It focused on the achievements of black directors of companies listed on the JSE. In assessing the study, we realised there was a much greater story to share, by not only tracking the progression of transformation in South Africa but also looking at the people behind the figures and the inspirational individual journeys they followed. Hence the establishment of the Citadel / Empowerdex Trailblazers initiative, a celebration of influential black South African leaders and a means of imparting their wisdom to future generations.

The stories of South African leaders are like no other. Many Trailblazers were initially hesitant to share their experiences but after some encouragement they let us into the stories of their lives. They recalled old memories which revealed the pain of political struggle, the glory of determination, a victory of spirit and unselfish success. Somehow from the embers of the past they have gathered enough light to illuminate the path ahead so that others may follow. It is this flaming torch of hope, passion and dedication and the unwavering pioneering spirit within these Trailblazers that will become a beacon for those charting the exciting future of South Africa and the continent.
